West Vancouver Library on July 24th

Hot, Hot, Hot and "It too darn hot" are phrases running through my cluttered mind right now as I bake in semi darkness in my artist space with the fan on my face.  I am supposed to paint - but I know these temperatures are going to make doing anything except really loose and free washes really hard to work on in watercolour!

However, I want to remind my readers that West Vancouver Library has asked me to do an interactive outdoor sketching and painting session on July 24th from 11am to 1pm on their rooftop garden.  There is space for 10 right now, but it looks like space will open up to a larger group as we will go to stage 3 on July 1st. Yeh!!!

This is a great time to grab your sketch books or your plein air kits and come join me for some great interactive painting.  I will be using watercolours and will be also promoting the "FREE" digital program that all public libraries in the lower mainland including West Vancouver Library card holders have access to with your library card.

The idea is to get introduced to this online creative space that gives you 30 day prompts, great tips on art and different art mediums and also on other creative activities like quilting and sewing.  Registrants will be asked to try out Creativebug ahead of time and watch

https://www.creativebug.com/classseries/single/watercolor-painting-in-the-garden

This is only a preview - so don't enter this site directly, but do enter the Library site with your library card and the prompts you receive to get into the digital libary and watch away.

I will be doing similar demos of trees, the colour greens, a garden scene and up close flower.  What I like about Yao Cheng's style is that she doesn't use a pencil first.  This is liberating to me as I tend to do a lot of sketching and drawing prior to painting.  I am practising these sketching and watercolour ideas so that we can paint along together for the two hours.  I will do quick demos and leave time between to paint and ask questions about anything watercolour, plein air and sketching.  I will have a plein air kit with me.  I will have handouts too and will try and make the time together fun and exciting especially since we have been so removed from any social and fun gatherings!

Thanks for your participation!

Artist fans! Thankyou all for your participation on zoom via the OPUS art supply demo on botanicals.  Over 100 people were signed up and many of you stayed the full duration even though the heat has been incredible here in Vancouver, B.C.  I had viewers from all over including a friend from Ajijic, Jalisco and a fan in Ontario.  It was great to connect with many of my former students as well!!

For those of you who attended and for many of you who might be interested.  I am a member of the Northwest Watercolour Society NWWS.org.  They have great demos that have been videotaped from their past meetings and have a good selection of juried shows that you can participate in. Although located in Washington, US.  They have a wide particiation from members all over.  Thomas Schaller will be offering a course through the society in October.

As well as the NWWS, there is also the ability to participate in the Canadian division of the International Watercolor Society.  Alice Bottril is the rep for the western provinces and would love to add more members.  There is the opportunity to participate online, through an online magazine and in many world wide competitions.

Now going back to the actual demo, here again is the information about my aids.  I often refer to my handy "Flower Painter's Pocket Palette" written and illustrated by Elisabeth Harden.  Its a great resource for flower shapes, ideal colours for different flowers and just generally great tips for your watercolour flower painting.

Someone asked about composition and I refered to several different designs in composition that have been written and illustrated.  I couldn't remember the artists name or the book - but I usually refer to this artist during my sketching and watercolour classes.

"Composition of Outdoor Painting" by Edgar Payne

You can find many references to these titles online and through Pinterest.

Its a wonderful month to be painting flowers and foliage so - Happy Painting!

exploration in colour and greens

Well, the time just disappears when you are happily exploring art.  My classes are finished for now on zoom and if you are interested in learning more about past classes that can be obtained and completed on your own, please email and I will send a PDF file with both free access for some of the videos and the others that can be made available.

I was asked by OPUS art supplies to complete another demo and Anna requested botanical colours and foliage with mixing of greens.

What a great challenge for me as I have been painting land and seascapes mostly for the zoom sessions.  Here and there a couple of colourful birds and animals were added, but they don't appear in the PDF writeup of sessions available - they are for later and more classes when we go back to in house sessions.

So back to the Opus demo on June 26th.  I decided on a series of items that are posted on their events page.  Ive completed a writeup describing the colours I will be using for each botanical flower or foliage.  To get myself ready, I started painting in my OPUS sketch book, from there tried out some other papers and then went to my Hanne Muehle paper and finally, the now available Extra White Fabriano paper.  What a difference!  The flowers are jumping of the page.

I haven't tested out the oregon grape foliage - which is the next item on my agenda.  However, you can view a lot of the process on my You tube, Instagram and Facebook sites where I have dropped inprogress photos and short videos.  This is just to wet your appetite for the upcoming event.

As well, I will be completing a plein air sketch and watercolour session with the West Vancouver Libary on July 24th.  It will be great to be back outdoors and fully vacinated!  Check out more info on my social media feeds. I will be getting a newsletter out - so if you would like to be added to my newsletters, please email me! soniamocnik@gmail.com
